Rose Alexander has always enjoyed caring for children.  When she took a job as a hearing officer, her interest peaked. As a hearing officer she was working with children who had discipline problems, seeing the children at their worst. That is when she realized that she wanted to be a more positive influence on children and work with them at a younger age, when it would make a greater difference in their lives.

About five years ago Rose saw a flier about First Step Fund's Developing Your Family Child Care Business class and she took a step towards her dream by signing up for the class. Rose found the class very informative, she says. “I encourage anyone wanting a childcare business to go to class and learn everything they can, because they could learn everything they need to know about running their business.”

Today, Rose attributes her success to the knowledge she gained in the class and her past experience with children. “Children feel that they can trust me, they open up and then they tend to be successful. If you understand developmental stages, you can guide them and watch them grow—let children be themselves.”
